Fortunately the summer season has almost ended and consequently the aristocratic situation has returned to normal, having in mind the aristocrat’s parameters, obviously…, so it’s time to resume the exclusive silent season, now that this Herr Graf has returned from one of those luxurious spa retirements in Switzerland full of decrepit and sickly guests and where only horrible water is served. For that reason this Herr Von missed very much his silent films together with a cocktail in his hands, but now, happily the perfect atmosphere and depressed autumn mood is coming.
But meanwhile until the autumn cold and darkness knock at the Schloss door, why not watch a hilarious silent film as a contrast to the usual bad-tempered aristocratic mood of the whole year?... so the screening at the Schloss theatre of “Das Fidele Gefängnis”, was an excellent choice.
It is an early Herr Ernst Lubitsch film so characteristic of the German period of that great German director; a mid-length oeuvre, full of irony and sarcasm depicting with a special Teutonic sense of humour the marital troubles of a German bourgeois couple.
Herr Lubitsch intertwined different characters in the story with three parallel situations ( the bourgeois couple, their maid and the admirer of the wife ). The characters will suffer particular adventures, from a typical decadent soirée to a particular Teutonic jail, until finally everything will be more or less settled.
The wicked and masterful irony of the German director that made him famous in the whole world, is demonstrated during the beginning of the film when an amazed wife is searching for her husband (who spent the night outside and alone) through the whole house with the help of her maid but without success; they check every room in vain when maliciously the maid suggests, with a wicked look, her own room; that‘s pure and unique Lubitsch’s style, ja wohl!.
The film has many malicious and delicate misunderstandings so common in Herr Lubitsch early oeuvres; there is a chaotic soirée and a frantic ball. This is pure aristocratic Teutonic decadence, certainly.
“Das Fidele Gefängnis” it is not a great film but has many recognizable Herr Lubitsch elements much to the joy of silent film fans who admire the mastery of the German director ( perfect stars and supporting actors, careful designs, splendid cinematography ); a small picture of the German director, full of “joie de vivre”, so necessary in Europe during the First World War, the time when the film was made.
And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must search through the Schloss for a Teutonic rich heiress.

Afortunadamente la temporada veraniega ya casi está llegando a su fin y debido a ello, las cuestiones aristocráticas van recobrando poco a poco su normalidad, teniendo en cuenta, lógicamente…, los parámetros aristocráticos… por eso mismo ya era hora de recuperar las exclusivas sesiones silentes, una vez que éste Herr Graf ha regresado de su lujoso retiro en un balneario suizo, repleto este de decrépitos y enfermizos inquilinos, lugar en donde solamente se servía una terrible y pútrida agua mineral… por dichos motivos, éste Herr Von ya añoraba sus queridos filmes silentes y así además tener en sus manos, durante la proyección de los mismos, un elegante cocktail… y es que, felizmente, el deprimente otoño y su perfecta atmósfera aristocrática ya se vislumbra en el horizonte.
Pero mientras se aguarda que la oscuridad y el frío otoñal llamen a la puerta del Schloss, ¿por qué no contemplar un filme hilarante y silente como contraste con el habitual tono malhumorado y aristocrático?.... por dicho motivo, la proyección en el teatro del Schloss del filme “Das Fidele Gefängnis”, se antojaba toda una elección perfecta.
Se trata de una obra de juventud de Herr Ernst Lubitsch, un filme con muchas de las características de los filmes de la época germánica del director germánico, esto es, un mediometraje repleto de ironía y sarcasmo en el cual se reflejan, con un especial sentido del humor teutón, los problemas maritales de una pareja burguesa germánica.
Herr Lubitsch, entrelaza diferentes personajes de la historia en tres historias paralelas ( la pareja burguesa, su sirvienta y un admirador de la esposa ), personajes que sufrirán diferentes aventuras que van desde una típica y decadente soirée hasta toda una particular cárcel teutónica, hasta que finalmente todo, más o menos, tiene un final feliz.
La malvada y genial ironía del director germánico, ésa por la cual pasará a la historia del cinematógrafo, se exhibe en el mismo inicio del filme, cuando una sorprendida esposa busca por su marido ( el cual ha pasado la noche solo y fuera de su hogar ) por toda la casa y con la ayuda de su criada, aunque sin ningún éxito; ambas dos van comprobando cada habitación de la casa en vano, cuando de forma maliciosa, la criada le sugiere, con una cómplice mirada y a su ama, que no sería mala idea que le diesen un vistazo a su habitación… desde luego esto es puro e irrepetible estilo Herr Lubitsch, Ja wohl!.
El filme posee numerosos y maliciosos, además de delicados, malentendidos tan habituales éstos en los filmes de juventud de Herr Lubitsch, además de una caótica soirée que incluye, como es preceptivo, un frenético baile, todo un ejemplo de pura decadencia aristocrática, ciertamente.
“Das Fidele Gefängnis” no es desde luego, una de las grandes obras de Herr Lubitsch, aunque el filme posee muchos elementos que lo hacen apreciable para los numerosos admiradores de la maestría del director germánico que pululan por todo el mundo silente, como puedan ser sur ejemplares actores protagonistas y todos los secundarios del filme, su cuidada dirección artística o su espléndida fotografía, una pequeña obra de Herr Lubitsch repleta de “joie de vivre”, tan necesaria ésta en Europa durante la época en la cual el filme fue rodado: la primera guerra mundial.
Y ahora si me lo permiten, les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este conde germánico tiene que buscar por todo el Schloss a una de sus ricas herederas teutónicas.
